Two Sweet Peas

The Butterfly Garden

When I was small
We lived near a zoo.
All summer long
Mama and I went
to the butterfly garden.

In that garden
filled with purple
lacy flowers,
butterflies danced on air.

We'd stare and stare
till all our cares
lifted off
like they had wings.

Mama would laugh.
Then she'd tell me,
"Baby, I bet we could fly
if we tried!"

After Mama went to Heaven,
Daddy and I went away too.
We packed out things in boxes
and moved to the city
to be near Grandma.

It feels like forever
since I saw a butterfly.
I know I'll never grow wings,
but I still wish I could.
